Sarmale And Mamaliga

No, you are not hallucinating. That is Kellen cooking. Actually, it was his idea to cook this meal. He came home from work the other day with a hankerin for this Romanian dish. He said that he ate it all the time on his mission and that is was easy to make. I laughed a little bit when we looked up the recipe for it! It seemed pretty involved and time consuming, and come to find out, it really was! Kellen was so excited about it though so we decided to go ahead and try it out. Plus, I was curious to see what he ate for 2 years! Needless to say, this was a far cry from my usual 'throw some chicken and whatever else I see in the cupboard in the crock pot' kind of meal. Sarmale is Romanian for "stuffed cabbage" and Mămăligă is an extremely fattening, uber delicious cornmeal cake type of thing...
Mixing the cornmeal before adding the butter and cheese.....
Cabbage leaves boiled in salt and vinegar
Onions, oil, paprika... then you mix in the ground pork. Yummmmmm!

Roll the "pork mixture" in the vinegar soaked cabbage leaves.

Boil the rolls layered with tomato sauce and sauerkraut for about 3 hours.
The finished product

Actually I stole this picture off a cooking website, but I think ours turned out just as beautiful! I have to admit that they were quite tasty, in a sauerkrauty, porkey, cabbagey sort of way! Kellen devoured them so I'd say it was a success. If anything, we had a good time cooking together. It's a beautiful thing having my honey home at night right now!
